Wall of Fame Class of 2017

The University of Scranton inducted the Class of 2017 into the athletics Wall of Fame during a ceremony in the Long Center on Saturday, Feb. 10.

This Class of 2017 includes Kathy (Loretangeli) Field '93 (women's soccer)Taryn (Mellody) Liuzzo '07 (women's basketball), Allison (Matt) Martin '07 (women's basketball), Jackie (Messantonio) McGovern '07 (women's lacrosse), John Mercuri '07 (men's cross country), Patty (Levey) Serpe '88 (women's soccer) and Stanley "Pete" Tarutis '92 (baseball).

The Wall of Fame was founded in 1970 to honor student-athletes, administrators and those in the community who have been instrumental in the overall development of the University's athletics program. The Class of 2017 brings the Wall's membership to 255.

Women's Basketball (22-1, 11-1)

The University of Scranton women's basketball team clinched the top seed and home court advantage throughout the Landmark Conference playoffs with two more wins to extend their winning streak to 17 games.

Bridgette Mann (Canadensis, Pa./Wallenpaupack) scored a career-high 34 points and matched a career-best with eight rebounds to power Scranton to a 65-52 victory over Drew on Wednesday night. The Lady Royals led by one point entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Rangers 22-10 in the final period to put the game out of reach.

On Saturday, Scranton honored seniors Katie Broderick (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and Katie Feehery (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) before defeating Catholic 62-43 to secure the #1 seed in the conference playoffs. Mann again led the Lady Royals with 18 points, Makenzie Mason (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) netted 14 points, while Ava Gammo (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) pulled down a career-high seven rebounds. 

The women's basketball team will close out a four-game homestand on Wednesday evening when they welcome Susquehanna to the Long Center for a Landmark Conference matchup starting at 7 p.m.

Men's Basketball (11-12, 7-5 Landmark)

The University of Scranton men's basketball team split a pair of Landmark Conference games last week and is in a tie for fourth place in the Landmark Conference with two games remaining. The top four teams make next week's conference playoffs.

The Royals opened the week with a 77-65 victory over first-place Drew in Madison, N.J., the second time this season they defeated the Rangers. Sophomore guard Kyle DeVerna (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) led the team with 20 points. Senior forward Drew Schankweiler (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) had a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds, and sophomore forward Matthew Mancuso (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater) also had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

On Saturday, the Royals suffered an 81-79 loss to Catholic in the team's regular season finale in the Long Center. Schankweiler had his 10th double-double of the season with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Senior guard Mitch Cross (Marriottsville, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) also had 19 points, Mancuso finished with 14 and senior guard Ethan Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights) added 12.

The Royals begin their final week of regular season play by traveling to Selinsgrove, Pa. on Wednesday, Feb. 14, to take on Susquehanna at 7 p.m.

Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field

Sophomore Caroline Banas (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) continued her standout season for The University of Scranton women's track & field team, winning the high jump at the NYU Invitational on Friday at the New York City Armory.

Banas cleared 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches) to win for the third time in four events during the indoor season. She edged Cassie Cronk of Moravian by .05 meters (2 inches).

A pair of athletes from the men's track & field team added top-20 finishes in the event. Junior Mark Merli (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) finished 16th in the men's long jump with a leap of 5.84 meters (19 feet, 2 inches). Sophomore Keyser Leepier (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) was 17th in the men's 60-meter dash, finishing with a time of 7.32 seconds. It was his best time of the season by .04 seconds.

The men's and women's track & field teams will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Marc Deneault Invitational at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.

Wrestling

The University of Scranton wrestling team went on the road Saturday to face a tough Centenary squad and came away with a 26-6 defeat.

The Royals (8-4) earned a pair of decisions, with senior Nicholas DePierro (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) picking up an 8-3 win at 133 pounds and freshman William Laughlin (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) earning a 10-6 win at 157 pounds.

The University of Scranton wrestling team will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 16, when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to take on Wilkes University at 7 p.m.
