Royal Review: December 3-9 (No. 15 in a weekly series)

Men’s basketball (6-1, 1-1 Landmark)

The University of Scranton men’s basketball team rose to No. 9 in the Top 25 early in the week before going 1-1 in its two games.

The Royals went on the road Thursday, Dec. 6, and posted a come-from-behind 64-57 victory over Mt. St. Mary in Newburgh, N.Y. Senior guard Travis Farrell (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) led four players in double figures with 14 points. Senior guard Tim Lavelle (Clarks Green, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) had 12 points, including 10 in the first half, sophomore forward Jason Pierce (Scranton, Pa./Conestoga/Lackawanna College) had 12 points and nine rebounds, and sophomore guard Ross Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy, N.J.) added 11 points.

Scranton suffered its first loss of the season when it fell to Merchant Marine Academy, 67-54, in Landmark Conference play in the John Long Center on Sunday, Dec. 9. Danzig led the Royals with 14 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. The loss snapped a 14-game home winning streak and a 37-game home conference winning streak.

The Royals are back in action on Saturday, Dec. 15, when they host nearby Keystone College at 7 p.m. in the Long Center.

Women’s basketball (7-2, 2-0 Landmark)

The University of Scranton women’s basketball team moved into the Top 25 at No. 21, but lost two of three games during the week.

The Lady Royals suffered their first loss of the season when they fell to Wilkes, 75-67, on Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the Long Center. Sophomore forward Meredith Mesaris (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) had 30 points and 12 rebounds, senior forward Erin Boggan (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) had 16 points and sophomore guard Lindsay Fluehr (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) added 10 points.

Scranton went on the road on Saturday, Dec. 8, and lost to DeSales, 70-46, in Center Valley, Pa. Mesaris had 16 points and Fluehr added 10 as the Lady Royals struggled from the field, shooting just 23.1 percent.

The Lady Royals bounced back a day later, defeating Landmark Conference foe Merchant Marine Academy, 81-59, in the John Long Center. Mesaris had 22 points, junior guard Alison Sweeney (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) had 14 and Boggan added 11 points and nine rebounds.

Scranton is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 15, when it hosts Kean University at 5 p.m. in the Long Center.
