Women’s lacrosse (2-2)

The University of Scranton women’s lacrosse team won a pair of games last week, including the first career victory for head coach Cindy Wilson. 

The Royals gave Wilson her first win when they defeated Neumann, 14-7, on Thursday, March 14, in Aston, Pa. Sophomore midfielder Emily Goss (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) scored a career-high six goals and senior goalkeeper Kathleen Smart (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood) finished with a game-high seven saves. 

The Royals also received three goals from freshman midfielder Erin Allen (Syosset, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy), two from junior attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional), and one goal and three assists from senior attacker Deanna Giorno (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South)

Scranton made it a 2-0 week by rallying from an early one-goal deficit to beat Cabrini, 16-10, on Saturday, March 16, in Radnor, Pa. Goss finished with five goals, Sullivan added four, and Giorno, junior midfielder Shannon Ginty (Mineola, NY/Sacred Heart Academy), and Allen chipped in two goals apiece.

Scranton is back in action on Tuesday, March 19, when it hosts New Paltz St. at 3 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field. 

Men’s lacrosse (2-3)

The University of Scranton men’s lacrosse team won its second straight when it held off crosstown rival Marywood, 9-7, on the road on Saturday, March 16.

Sophomore attacker Will Mahle (Montgomery, N.J./Montgomery) and senior attacker Kevin Brier (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) scored two goals apiece, and senior midfielder Dillon McInerney (Hawthorne, N.J./Bergen Catholic) had a goal and three assists. 

Sophomore Matt Finor (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) won 11 of 17 face-offs and senior goalkeeper Ben Worthington (Jenkintown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) finished with 13 saves for Scranton, which now leads the all-time series with Marywood, 6-0.

The Royals are back in action on Wednesday, March 20, when they travel to Hackettstown, N.J. to face Centenary at 3 p.m. 

Baseball (5-4)

The University of Scranton baseball team opened Landmark Conference play by sweeping a doubleheader at Juniata on Sunday, March 17. The Royals won the opener, 13-12 in nine innings, then took the second game, 13-9.

In the opener, senior pinch-hitter Anthony Duchnowski (Dunmore, Pa./Bishop O’Hara) delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth to deliver the victory. The Royals got two hits from sophomore first baseman Ross Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy, N.J.) and senior shortstop Tim LeCompte (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic). Danzig, junior outfielder Michael Gaeta (Cranford, N.J./Cranford), sophomore Nick Papillo (Germantown, Md./St. John’s College H.S.) and sophomore second baseman Matt Maghini (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) each had two RBIs in the victory. 

Sophomore right-hander Josh Bayzick (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to get the victory.

In the second game, Gaeta finished 3-for-5 with a double and five RBIs. Danzig went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, and junior designated hitter Eric Pizzico (Royersford, Pa./Spring Ford) singled, drove in three and scored twice. Junior third baseman Mike Trabulsi (Malverne, N.Y./Chaminade) added two hits, an RBI and a run. 

Sophomore right-hander Jimmy Sawyer (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) worked the final 1 1/3 innings and did not allow a run to earn the save.

Scranton is back in action on Wednesday, March 20, when it hosts Misericordia at 3:30 p.m. at Connell Park.
