Royal Review: October 1-7 (No. 6 in a weekly series)
Men’s Soccer (9-0-1, 3-0 Landmark Conference)
The University of Scranton men’s soccer team went on the road and knocked of nationally ranked Susquehanna University, 1-0, on Saturday, Oct. 6.
Sophomore forward Kevin Kozic (Raritan, N.J./Immaculata) scored the game’s only goal on an assist from senior midfielder Patrick M. Daley (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas). Senior goalie James Dillon (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) made a pair of saves for his fifth shutout of the season.
Susquehanna entered the match ranked 15th in the nation and second in the Mid-Atlantic region in the National Soccer Coaches Assocation of America rankings. The Royals came into the game ranked fifth in the Mid-Atlantic region.
The Royals are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 10, when they visit Swarthmore, Pa. to take on Swarthmore University at 7 p.m.
Field Hockey (8-3, 3-0 Landmark Conference)
The University of Scranton field hockey team continued its strong play, posting a pair of Landmark Conference victories during the week, securing a playoff berth in the process.
The Royals began the week by defeating Moravian, 2-1, at Fitzpatrick Field on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Freshman forward Alyssa Whitman (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) and sophomore midfielder Kathleen Keale (Wall, N.J./Wall) scored goals in the victory, and sophomore goalie Krista Mundy (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made 12 saves.
On Saturday, Oct. 6, the Royals rolled to a 4-0 win over Susquehanna behind a pair of goals from Whitman. Senior forward Gretchen Kempf (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) and junior midfielder Jessica Conroy (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) added goals in the victory, which clinched a Landmark Conference playoff berth for Scranton.
The Royals are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 10, when they travel to Oneonta, N.Y. to face Oneonta State at 4:30 p.m.
Women’s Soccer (5-5-2, 2-0 Landmark Conference)
The University of Scranton women’s soccer team posted a victory in its only match of the week, a 4-0 win at Susquehanna on Saturday, Oct. 6.
The Royals received goals from junior forward Samantha Russo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown), freshman forward Gianna Vitolo (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) and freshman midfielder Michaela Arbus (Pequannock, N.J./DePaul Catholic). They also received an own goal by Susquehanna.
Scranton returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 10, when it travels to Danbury, Conn. to face Western Connecticut State at 7 p.m.
Women’s Volleyball (14-10, 1-2 Landmark Conference)
The University of Scranton women’s volleyball team dropped its only match of the week, losing to nationally ranked Cortland State, 25-21, 25-19, 26-24, on Wednesday, Oct. 3, in the Long Center.
Sophomore outside hitter Julia Crilly (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) led the Royals with 14 kills and 13 digs, and senior outside hitter Jenell McFadden (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) had 10 kills and 14 digs.
Cortland State entered the match ranked 12th in the nation in the American Volleyball Coaches Association rankings.
Scranton is back in action on Monday, Oct. 8, when it hosts Wilkes at 8 p.m. in the Long Center.
Sophomore Bill Burke (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) and junior Stefan Bossbaly (Washington Crossing, Pa./Holy Ghost Preparatory) finished 25th and 26th, respectively, for The University of Scranton men’s cross country team at the fifth annual Jack Saint Clair Memorial at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia on Saturday, Oct. 6.
Burke completed the five-mile course in 30:10, five seconds ahead of Bossbaly. Senior Matt Wilcox (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Preparatory) finished 47th in 31:10, and freshman Corey Wasilnak (Endwell, N.Y./Maine Endwell) was 71st in 32:12.
The Royals did not field a full team and did not qualify for the team standings.
Scranton is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Princeton Invitational at 11:15 a.m. in Princeton, N.J.
The University of Scranton women’s cross country team finished sixth at the fifth annual Jack Saint Clair Memorial at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia on Saturday, Oct. 6.
Sophomore Laura Fay (Thornton, Pa./Padua Academy) paced four runners in the top 40, finishing the 6,000-meter course in 25:46 to finish 16th overall. Junior Mary O'Neill (Middletown North/Middletown, N.J.) was next across the line in 23rd for the Royals in 26:17, followed by freshman Abigail Roselli (Romansville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) in 33rd in 27:12, junior Ariana Molierre (Brockton, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) in 37th in 27:24, and senior Shannon Lavelle (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) in 54th in 28:23.
The Royals will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Princeton Invitational at 10:30 a.m. in Princeton, N.J.
