Royal Review: November 25-December 1 (No. 14 in a weekly series)
Men’s Basketball (4-1)
The University of Scranton men’s basketball team went 1-1 during the week, dropping a game at nationally ranked Cabrini before bouncing back to defeat Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) at home.
The Royals opened their week with a 98-79 loss at ninth-ranked Cabrini on Tuesday, Nov. 26, in Radnor, Pa. Scranton had four players in double figures in scoring, led by 23 points from junior guard Ross Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy, N.J.). Junior guard Justin Klingman (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) added a career-high 17, senior guard Michael Barr (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) had 12 and sophomore forward Brendan Boken (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola) added 11.
Scranton rebounded on Saturday, Nov. 30, to defeat Mount Saint Mary, 77-64, in the Long Center. Senior guard Tommy Morgan (Greenlawn, N.Y./Chaminade) had 19 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals to lead the way. Boken added 16 points and eight rebounds, Danzig had 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and four blocks, and senior forward Jason Pierce (Scranton, Pa./Conestoga/Lackawanna College) had 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Scranton is back in action when it opens Landmark Conference play on Saturday, Dec. 7, against Susquehanna at 2 p.m. in Selinsgrove, Pa.
Women’s Basketball (2-2)
The University of Scranton women’s basketball team lost its only game of the week, falling at Cabrini, 61-57, on Tuesday, Nov. 26, in Radnor, Pa.
Junior forward Meredith Mesaris (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) led Scranton with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds, her second double-double of the season and fourth of her career. Freshman forward Sarah Payonk (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) added 12 points, five rebounds, four blocks and two steals, and junior point guard Lindsay Fluehr (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) had 11 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two assists.
The Lady Royals are back in action on Saturday, Dec. 7, when they open Landmark Conference play against Susquehanna at 4 p.m. in Selinsgrove, Pa.
