Women’s Basketball (22-3, 13-1 Landmark)
The University of Scranton women’s basketball team clinched the top seed in this week’s Landmark Conference playoffs with a pair of victories to wrap up the regular season. The Lady Royals will host a conference semifinal game on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Long Center.
Scranton secured the top seed with a thrilling 70-69 victory at Moravian on Wednesday, Feb. 19, in Bethlehem, Pa. Freshman forward Sarah Payonk (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) made a pair of free throws with six seconds left to put Scranton up four, and a Moravian 3-pointer in the final second was rendered meaningless. Payonk finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. Junior forward Meredith Mesaris (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) had a team-high 18 points and freshman forward Alexix Roman (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) added 12.
The Lady Royals celebrated Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 22, against Goucher in the Long Center with a 92-48 victory. Mesaris had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Roman had 12 points, and Payonk and senior guard Alison Sweeney (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) had 10 each.
Prior to tip-off, the Lady Royals honored Sweeney, senior forward Katie Sherry (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) and senior guard Katie Cunningham (Garden City, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), who were playing their final regular season game in the Long Center. Sweeney was also presented with the Dr. Harold Davis Award, which is annually presented to the team’s most valuable senior.
The Lady Royals will host Juniata in a Landmark Conference semifinal on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Long Center. The winner advances to the championship on Saturday, March 1, at the site of the highest remaining seed at a time to be determined.
Men’s Basketball (22-3, 12-2 Landmark)
With the top seed in the Landmark Conference playoffs already secured, The University of Scranton men’s basketball team tuned up for the playoffs with a pair of conference victories.
The Royals opened the week by holding off Moravian, 67-61, on Wednesday, Feb. 19, in the Long Center. Junior guard Justin Klingman (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) led four players in double figures with 18 points. Sophomore forward Brendan Boken (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola) had 17 points and senior guard Michael Barr (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and junior guard Ross Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy, N.J.) added 14 apiece.
On Saturday, Feb. 22, the Royals celebrated Senior Day by rolling to a 93-76 win over Goucher in the Long Center. Danzig led the Royals with 22 points, Barr had 17, Boken had 15 points and 11 rebounds, senior forward Jason Pierce (Scranton, Pa./Conestoga/Lackawanna College) had 14 points and eight rebounds, and senior guard Tommy Morgan (Greenlawn, N.Y./Chaminade) added 10 points in the win.
Prior to tip-off, the Royals honored Barr, Pierce, Morgan, senior guard Mike Marchman (Blauvelt, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) and senior forward Kyle Ranck (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area), who were all playing their final regular season game in the Long Center.

Men’s Lacrosse (0-1)
The University of Scranton men’s lacrosse team opened its season with a heart-breaking 9-8 loss at Wesley College in Dover, Del. on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Royals rallied from a two-goal deficit late in the fourth period, but Wesley scored with eight seconds left to win it.
The Royals received two goals and two assists from junior attacker Anthony Lombardo (Mendham, N.J./Mendham) and two goals and an assist from freshman attacker Brian Quinn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh). Senior midfielder John Gregitis (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep) also had a goal and an assist, and sophomore goalie Nicholas McKaba (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) had 20 saves.
The Royals return to action on Saturday, March 1, when they travel to Allentown, Pa. to take on Muhlenberg at 1 p.m.
