Seniors Carolyn Gillespie (New Market, Md./Linganore) and David Hovey (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) of The University of Scranton have been named the women’s and men’s swimming and diving Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the period ending Sunday, Jan. 22.
The duo had a memorable Senior Day, helping the Royals post victories over Misericordia on Saturday, Jan. 21, in the Byron Center. Gillespie had a trio of individual victories as Scranton’s women won, 142-120. Hovey earned a pair of individual wins to lead the men to a 173-89 win.
Gillespie earned the award for the second straight week and fourth time this season after picking up victories in the 50 freestyle (25.01), 100 freestyle (time unavailable) and 100 butterfly (1:00.10). She also swam a leg of the 200 freestyle relay team, which tied for first in 1:42.61.
Gillespie now has 19 individual victories this season, giving her 59 in dual-meet competition during her career.
Hovey had a memorable Senior Day with victories in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:18.17 and also swam to a victory in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.34. He also finished third in the 100 breaststroke.
Hovey is the first member of the Scranton men’s team to earn Landmark Conference swimming and diving Athlete of the Week this season. With his two individual victories, Hovey now has seven dual-meet victories this season and 28 for his career.
Scranton returns to the pool when it travels to Madison, N.J. to take on Drew University on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m.
