The University of Scranton women's tennis team made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in school history on Friday, May 11.

Women’s Tennis (9-6, 4-2 Landmark Conference)

The University of Scranton women’s tennis team made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance on Friday, May 11, when it traveled to Middlebury, Vt. to face Ithaca College in a first-round match. The Royals suffered a hard-fought 5-4 loss to the Bombers, bringing their season to an end.

Freshman Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) won a pair of matches for the Royals. She teamed with fellow freshman Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) for an 8-4 win at No. 3 singles, then posted a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.

The Royals also received an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles from sophomores Stephanie Buccuzzi (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) and Devon Cohen (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham). Senior Elisha Connell (Orangeburg, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) also pulled out a hard-fought 6-1, 0-6, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles for Scranton.

The University of Scranton’s spring sports season has now concluded, bringing an end to the 2011-2012 athletics year.
