The senior pair of Meredith Campbell (Media, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) and Hailey Marini (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland Central) have been two of the leaders for the University of Scranton field hockey team on the year, as the Royals are off to an 8-0 start to their season.
For their efforts this past week, the pair swept the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week awards for Field Hockey, as Campbell captured the conference's Offensive Athlete of the Week award, and Marini took the Defensive Athlete of the Week honor.
For Campbell, this marks the third time in her career that she has earned the Landmark's Offensive Athlete of the Week award, as she captured the award twice during the 2016 season. For Marini, this marks the first time in her career that she has earned the conference's Defensive Athlete of the Week award.
This past week, Campbell and Marini led the Royals to two more victories, as Scranton is now 8-0 and 1-0 in the Landmark Conference.
First on Tuesday against Marywood, Campbell scored a goal in the 62nd minute that tied the match, as Scranton went on to take a 2-1 victory on the road. On Saturday in the Landmark opener at Moravian, Campbell scored three goals in the first period, as the Royals rolled to a 7-0 win to open conference play.
Marini, meanwhile, was one of the leaders of a defensive unit that allowed an early second-half goal to Marywood on the week. On Saturday at Moravian, Marini and the Royals defense held Moravian to not only a shutout, but to only one shot in the match.
For the year, Campbell has already scored 11 goals, which is tied for a team-high at the moment. Campbell has also already surpassed her goal total of a season ago (in which she earned All-Landmark Conference honors) in eight matches.
Marini, meanwhile, has been a part of a defensive unit that has recorded four shutouts and allowed just five goals in eight matches. She's also fired four shots on the offensive end, two of which were on goal.
Campbell, Marini, and the rest of the University of Scranton field hockey team returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Wilkes in a non-conference match at Fitzpatrick Field. Action is set to get underway at 7 p.m.
