The University of Scranton men’s and women’s basketball teams will return to action on Monday, January 2.
The Royals will open the new year against two familiar rivals in the inaugural PNC Bank Cross-County Challenge to be held the Insalaco Arena on the campus of Marywood University in Scranton.
Scranton, now 6-4 after nail-biting victories over North Central (Ill.) and Westfield State (Mass.) at the Daytona Beach Shootout before Christmas, battles Wilkes University (6-2) at 6:00 p.m. On Tuesday, January 3, the Royals meet another former Freedom Conference foe in King’s College (4-5) at 8:00 p.m.
Marywood, the host institution, will play King’s Monday at 8:00 p.m. and Wilkes Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in the pre-set tournament.
Both of the Royals’ games will be carried live by WUSR, 99.5 FM, and over the Internet at wusrfm.com, with veteran announcer Dean Corwin calling all the action. Wednesday’s game against King’s will also be televised by WQMY MyNetwork and carried on Comcast channel 11 (Scranton area), Service Electric channel 4 (Wilkes-Barre area), Direct TV HD or DishNetwork channel 53, and over the air on channel 53.1. The broadcast will also be simulcast live on MyFoxNEPA.com.
Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for senior citizens, children under the age of 10, and students from King’s, Scranton and Wilkes with a valid college ID. Students, faculty and staff from Marywood University will be admitted free with a valid college ID.
The Lady Royals (5-5) will meet Gettysburg College (3-5) in the opening round of the Days Inn tournament in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, at 6:00 p.m. Scranton will face the winner or loser of Neumann University (4-5)/Messiah (7-3) on Tuesday, January 3, at either 2 or 4:00 p.m.

Following Monday and Tuesday’s games, the Royals and Lady Royals will host the Gophers of Goucher College on Friday, January 6, at the Long Center. The men’s game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the women at 7:30 p.m.
