NEW HARTFORD, NY—Junior Justin Riley (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) shot an even-par and career-low round of 71 for The University of Scranton in the opening round of the Empire 8 Conference championships at the Yahnundasis Golf Club Saturday.
Riley is tied for second place for the individual title, just two strokes behind Tyler of McArdell of St. John Fisher, who carded a two-under-par 69. The Royals also received a 74 from junior Chris Schank (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Preparatory), a 77 from junior Jamie Bresnahan (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) and a pair of 79s from sophomore Charles Hudacek (Moosic, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) and sophomore Grant Gulick (Binghamton, NY/Johnson City).
Defending champion St. John Fisher lead the way with a 294, followed by Moravian College (300), Scranton (301), Elmira College (304), Susquehanna University (311), Stevens Institute of Technology (314), Nazareth College (342), and Utica College (357).
Riley’s 71 eclipses his previous low of 73 against Wilkes University and William Paterson on April 26, 2011, at the Wilkes-Barre Golf Club. It was also his second sub-80 round of the season and the 13th of his career.
Second round action continues Sunday. The Empire 8 Conference championship is a 72-hole event, with the final two rounds to be held at the Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pennsylvania, on Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22, 2012. Scranton is making its third straight appearance in this tournament, having finishing sixth in 2010 and fourth in 2011.
