TOWSON, Md. -- The University of Scranton men’s soccer
team had plenty of chances, but couldn’t find the back of the
goal in a 1-0 loss to Goucher College on Saturday afternoon in the
Landmark Conference opener for the Royals.
Scranton (2-4-2, 0-1 Landmark) outshot Goucher (4-5, 1-1 Landmark), 24-5, but the Gophers tallied the only goal of the game at the 24-minute mark of the first half when freshman midfielder Thomas Adair (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) headed home a pass from fellow freshman midfielder Nate Margolis (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North).
The Royals turned up the pressure in the second half, sending 24 shots toward the net, including seven on goal, but Goucher senior goalkeeper Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) made seven saves after the break and eight total in the game.
Sophomore midfielder Colin McFadden (Ventnor City, N.J./St. Augustine Preparatory) and sophomore forward Derek Klingman (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) put plenty of pressure on the Goucher defense. McFadden had a team-high six shots while Klingman added five.
The loss was Scranton’s first in six matchups all time against Goucher. The Royals were 5-0 against the Gophers entering play Saturday.
The Royals return to action Wednesday, Sept. 28 when they face York College at 6:30 p.m. at Millville High School in Millville, Pa.
