Men's Tennis Chosen Second In Landmark Conference Preseason Poll
The University of Scranton men’s tennis team is picked to finish second in the Landmark Conference, according to a preseason poll released by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.
The Royals, who went 8-5 and lost in the Landmark Conference championship last season, received one first-place vote and tallied 52 points in the poll, which was conducted among the conference’s eight head coaches. Five-time defending Landmark Conference champion Drew, which has won 12 straight conference championships overall, was chosen first after receiving seven first-place votes and 70 points.
Catholic was chosen third with 38 points, followed by Juniata (28), Susquehanna (25), Moravian (23), Goucher (12) and Merchant Marine Academy (8).
Scranton, led by seventh-year head coach Keith Hetsko, returns seven players from last year’s squad that went 6-1 against Landmark Conference foes during the regular season. Senior Tim McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) was a first-team all-conference selection in both singles and doubles last year. Fellow senior Bennett Kelley (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) was first-team in doubles, while senior Mike Pannone (Maplewood, N.J./Seton Hall Preparatory) was a second-team choice in doubles.
The Royals also welcome back junior David Teres (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon), who was Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year and earned first-team honors in singles and doubles in 2011. He sat out the 2012 season while studying overseas.
Scranton opens its spring season on Saturday, March 16, against Landmark Conference foe Juniata College at noon in Huntingdon, Pa.
