Men's Tennis Off To Strong Start At Scranton Invitational
Senior Joe Morra recorded the 45th victory of his career in singles in today's 9-0 win at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.


The University of Scranton men’s tennis team opened its fall season with a strong showing during the first day of action at the Scranton Invitational, advancing six singles players to the semifinals and a doubles team to the finals in the two-day event held at Royal Courts at DeNaples Fields with Marywood, Wilkes and Moravian.

The Royals went a combined 10-4 in singles action, which was held over three flights. They also went 3-3 in doubles action, which consists of two flights.

In first flight singles, a trio of Scranton players reached the semifinals – senior Tim McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Preparatory), junior David Teres (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) and senior Joe Morra (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Preparatory). Morra posted two victories – both by scores of 6-4, 6-2 – while McGurrin and Teres each won once, with McGurrin pulling out a 6-2, 1-6, 11-9 win over Wilkes freshman Michael Kranz (Depew, N.Y./Lancaster Central).

In the second flight, seniors Bennett Kelley (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) and Mike Pannone (Maplewood, N.J./Seton Hall Preparatory) each posted a straight-sets victory to reach the semifinals. In the third flight, senior Jonathan Russo (Madison, N.J./Madison) reached the semis with a 6-2, 7-5 win over teammate James Dalkiewicz (Shavertown, Pa./Lake-Lehman). The freshman had posted a first-round victory before falling to Russo.

In doubles action, Morra and Pannone posted a pair of victories to reach the first flight finals. In the second flight, Teres and Russo won an opening round match before falling in the semifinals.

Action will continue on Sunday at 9 a.m. at Royal Courts at DeNaples Fields.
