Freshman David Commender (Larchmont, N.Y./Iona Prep) came through in a big way for the men's tennis team over the weekend.
Commender pulled out a three-set victory at No. 6 singles to give the Royals the deciding point in a 5-4 victory at Drew on Saturday, March 29. As a result, Commender has been named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week.
With the match moved indoors due to steady rain all day, the Royals were unable to start until late afternoon, following the completion of the women's match between Scranton and Drew. As the match went on past 9 p.m., it appeared one singles victory could swing it in favor of either team. Commender made sure that team was Scranton.
He pulled out a 6-4, 0-6, 6-0 victory over Drew's Nick Lantieri to secure the decisive point for the Royals. It also gave Scranton (5-4, 2-0 Landmark) its third straight victory and second straight in Landmark play.
The victory was just the second singles victory of Commender's career, with the first coming in the Scranton Invitational this past fall.
Commender and the Royals will return to action on Saturday, April 4, when they host Juniata at 1 p.m. at Royal Courts.
