ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Scranton men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule with a 5-4 victory over Franciscan on Monday afternoon.  The Royals improve to 3-0 overall on the season while the Barons fall to 6-6.

Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) and Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) led Scranton with a pair of wins on the day.

The Royals held a 2-1 edge after doubles play as Harkins and Alexander Ochalski (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) teamed up for an 8-5 victory at #2 doubles while Swope and Christian Aksu (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) scored an 8-1 decision at the third doubles flight.

Franciscan won the #1 doubles match, 8-5.

Both wins would go on to win three singles contests apiece with Scranton clinching the match on thrilling win at #6 singles by Connor Lemieux (Guilford, Conn./The Gunnery), who rallied to post a 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 10-3 victory to give the Royals the win.

Swope also won at #4 singles, 6-1, 6-1 while Harkins posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at #5 singles to set up Lemieux's heroics after the Barons won the top three flights in singles competition.

Scranton will be right back in action on Tuesday as the Royals take on Colby-Sawyer in Orlando.
