Christine Capalbo (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck),
a senior pitcher on The University of Scranton softball team, was
one of four Royals to earn all-Landmark Conference honors, Joel
Cookson, associate commissioner, announced today.
Capalbo was named first team in a ballot conducted among the
conference’s six head coaches after earning second-team
honors a year ago. She is joined by junior Kaitlyn Frazza (West Caldwell, NJ/James
Caldwell), sophomore designated hitter Caitlin
McHenry (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas), and senior
infielder Kelly Zaccheo (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton),
each of whom was named second team.
Capalbo started 17 games and finished with a 14-3 win-loss record
this past season. In the latest Landmark Conference
statistical rankings, she is second in earned run average (1.88)
and wins, third in games started and fewest walks allowed (13),
fourth in opposing team batting average (.252), and fifth in
innings pitched (104). Her 14 wins are the second most in a
season in Scranton history. In addition, Capalbo finishes her
career sixth in wins (25) and strikeouts (115) and seventh in
innings pitched (199.1) in Royals’ history.
Frazza started 34 games and finished with a .390 batting average
that included 15 RBI, a double, and three triples. She also
finished with a .460 slugging percentage and a .451 on-base
percentage. She hit safely in 23 games and had 11 multi-hit
games. Frazza is currently second in the Landmark Conference
in sacrifice bunts with 12.
McHenry put up impressive offensive numbers in her first year with
the program. She currently leads the conference in batting
average (.463), slugging percentage (.800), and on-base percentage
(.531). She is also second in RBI (44), third in home runs
(7), tied for fourth in hits (44), and fifth in runs scored
(33). McHenry appeared in all 36 games, started 33 times, and
hit safely in 25 games, including 14 multi-hit games. She
also drove in at least one run 21 times, including 13 games with
two-or-more. Her .463 batting average is the eighth highest
single-season average in Scranton history.
Zaccheo started 34 games at shortstop and hit a career-high .395
this past season. She is currently third in the Landmark
Conference in hits (45) and on-base percentage (.481) and fourth in
doubles (14). She hit safely in 25 games, including 14
multi-hit games, and led the Royals on the defensive end in assists
with 57.
In four years, she started 119 of 122 games and finished with 105
hits, including 21 doubles, and 37 RBI.
Led by first year head coach Mia
Collarini, the Royals ended their 2012 season with a
26-10 record and made their third straight appearance in the
Landmark Conference tournament. The 26 wins were the second
most in school history.
