Sophomore center Sofia Recupero (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) came off the bench to lift The University of Scranton women's basketball team to a victory in the season opener on Friday night. As a result, she has been named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week.
Recupero scored a game-high 21 points as the Lady Royals rallied for a 64-52 win over King's in the Cross-County Challenge at Wilkes University. Scranton trailed by seven (19-12) at the end of one quarter, but Recupero scored 19 points the rest of the way in the victory.
For the game, Recupero finished 9-for-13 from the field and 3-for-5 from the free throw line. She also had a team-high seven rebounds, including four on the offensive end.
A day later, Recupero had four points, a rebound and an assist as Scranton rolled to a 78-43 victory over Wilkes in the second day of the Cross-County Challenge.
Recupero and the Lady Royals are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 21, for the team's home opener against Marywood at 7 p.m. in the Long Center.
