WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's golf team took the cue from the their fellow fall sport student-athletes by defeating Misericordia, 4-1, and Wilkes, 4-0, in match play in the team's season opening event at Wilkes-Barre Golf Club on Monday afternoon.
The victories by the women's golf team conclude a perfect opening weekend of action for The University of Scranton athletics teams. Royals teams went 12-0 since Friday, with women's volleyball leading the way with four victories. The men's and women's soccer teams, field hockey and women's golf all posted a pair of victories each.
Senior Julie Cranney (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East), junior Maura McDonough (Dunmore, Pa./Holy Cross) and sophomore Brianna Stein (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) each posted a pair of victories to lead the women's golf team on Monday.
Cranney was a 4 & 3 winner against Misericordia and 5 & 4 against Wilkes. McDonough posted a 9 & 8 win against Misericordia and a 9 & 7 victory against Wilkes. Stein earned a 5 & 4 win against Misericordia and a 9 & 8 win against Wilkes.
The Royals also received an 8 & 7 win from senior Katie Allen (New Milford, Conn./Immaculate High School) against Wilkes. And junior Maggie McDonough (Dunmore, Pa./Holy Cross) was a 9 & 8 winner against Misericordia.
The women's golf team will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 9, when they take on Wilkes at Scranton Municipal Golf Course in Mount Cobb, Pa., at noon.
