SCRANTON, Pa. -- Sophomore Katie Rogers (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored a career-high six goals on the afternoon to lead the offense, as the University of Scranton women's lacrosse team opened a 13-3 lead at halftime and never looked back in a 20-9 victory over Moravian in Landmark Conference play at Fitzpatrick Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Royals improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Landmark Conference. Moravian fell to 6-4 and 0-2 in the Landmark with the defeat.
In the opening frame, Scranton opened the scoring early in regulation and never let up, scoring at one point 11 unanswered goals to take a commanding 12-2 lead with 7:45 to go in the period.
After Moravian scored with 3:13 left to make it a 12-3 game, the Royals answered with a goal at the buzzer of the half to take a 10-goal lead into intermission.
The second half saw Moravian score the first two goals to cut the Scranton lead down to 13-5. But, Scranton answered, scoring four goals in a row to essentially put the visiting Greyhounds away for the afternoon by taking a 16-5 lead with 21:55 left.
From there, Scranton coasted down the stretch, eventually hitting the 20-goal mark for the second time on the year with a score by freshman Meghan Loomie (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) with 13 seconds left in regulation.
Overall, Rogers led the way with her six-goal afternoon, scoring four of those goals in the first half. The sophomore also recorded an assist on the day, as well.
Elsewhere, a trio of Scranton players scored three goals, apiece - senior Meghan Kerr (Warwick, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic), junior Colleen O'Rourke (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and sophomore Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial). Kerr also ended the day with four assists, as well.
Five players, meanwhile, scored one goal on the day - Loomie, sophomore Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) (who also had four assists), freshman Erin Ahern (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester), junior Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), and freshman Victoria Pardi (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa). Ahern, Angelo and Pardi all recorded assists, as well.
Defensively, freshman goalie Erin Putnam (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) earned the win after making eight saves in net in the first half of play. Junior Dana Siepietowski (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) had four ground balls, while Angelo posted five draw controls to round out the top performances on the day for Scranton.
The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team returns to action on Thursday, traveling to Elizabethtown for a Landmark Conference match on the road. Things are slated to get underway at 4 p.m.
