WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Ian Evans (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) won twice at 157 pounds on Saturday to advance to Sunday's semifinals to lead The University of Scranton at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional at Lycoming College.

Evans is now one win from qualifying for the national championships, as the top three finishers at each weight class advance to nationals. Sunday's action gets underway at 10 a.m.

Evans received an opening-round bye, then posted a technical fall over Waynesburg's Derek Hull, 16-0 in 5:00. That put Evans in the quarterfinals, where he edged SUNY-Oswego's Tyler Silverthorn, 4-2. He will take on second-seeded Nicholas Racanelli of Wilkes in Sunday's semifinal.

The two wins improve Evans to 28-6 this season and give him 89 career victories, which rank third in school history.

The Royals have two other wrestlers still alive in the consolation bracket, sophomores Nicholas DePierro (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold) at 133 pounds and Zachary D'Apolito (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) at 165 pounds). Both will continue their consolation runs on Sunday morning.

DePierro received a first-round bye, then suffered a 4-1 loss to Mount Union's Alec Cotton to drop into the consolation bracket where he rebounded with three straight wins. It started with a pin in 2:12 of Washington & Jefferson's Michael Smith and continued with a 5-2 decision over Muskingum's Toby Warrington. DePierro then capped his day with a pin of Richie Gilson of Wilkes in 3:00.

D'Apolito also received a first-round bye, then knocked off York's Francis Krauss, 13-7, to reach the quarterfinals. There, he suffered a narrow 14-11 loss to Baldwin Wallace's Anthony Arroyo. In the consolation bracket, D'Apolito rebounded to end the day with a 5-2 decision over Muskingum's Tanner Walker.

Senior Eric Calimano (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) and freshman Daniel D'Agostini (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) each had one victory at 184 and 285 pounds, respectively.

The Royals are currently 15th among the 18 teams at the regional. They have 19.5 points. Messiah sits in first place with 74.5 points.
