UNION, N.J. - The University of Scranton women's soccer team controlled every facet of the game on Friday afternoon against Stockton, as the Royals kicked off their 2017 campaign with a 3-0 victory over the Ospreys as part of the 2017 Cougar Classic played on the campus of Kean University.
In the victory, Scranton (1-0) had three corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of play, before in the 11th minute, freshman Mazie Stiles (Nyack, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) served a ball into the box that was headed in by senior Hannah DeMars (Cranford, N.J./Cranford), giving the Royals the early 1-0 edge on Stockton.
The rest of the first half saw Scranton keep Stockton at bay, as the Ospreys only fired two shots in the first 45 minutes, both of which were not on goal. The Royals continued to control play into the second half, firing the first two shots of the period that were both saved.
But, in the 60th minute, junior Jamie Hreniuk (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) found the back of the net for the first time in 2017 on a breakaway, giving Scranton the lead for good at 2-0. Fellow junior Brittany Uricchio (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) was credited with an assist on the play, as well.
For good measure, Scranton added another goal to cap off the night, as junior Erica Licari (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) scored on a penalty shot in the 78th minute to put the Royals up 3-0. From there, Scranton coasted, winning their season opener for the fourth straight season in the process.
Overall, Scranton ended the night with decided advantages over Stockton in shots (13-5) and corner kicks (19-2). In net, junior Colleen Berry (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) earned the shutout victory (the first of her career), making a save on the lone shot on goal by Stockton in the contest.
The University of Scranton women's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, as they finish off the Cougar Classic taking on host Kean at 4 p.m.
