Junior midfielder Erica Licari (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) converted a penalty kick in the 60th minute to lift The University of Scranton women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Moravian in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams on Saturday at Fitzpatrick Field.
Licari's goal was her second of the season and 11th of her career. It came after she was unable to convert a scoring chance in the first half, but given a chance at redemption, she came through when the Royals needed it most.
Scranton (5-2-1, 1-0-0 Landmark) received the penalty kick when junior forward Jamie Hreniuk (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) was pushed down on the far left side of the box. The center official didn't hesitate with his whistle and Licari took advantage.
The Royals escaped with the win despite being outshot, 9-7. Moravian (6-1-1, 0-1-0) saw a shot ring off the crossbar in the 97th minute, but the Scranton defense cleared the rebound and the Greyhounds never threatened after that.
Licari led Scranton with three shots while Hreniuk and freshman forward Mazie Stiles (Nyack, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) had two each. Junior goalkeeper Colleen Berry (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) made two saves for her fifth shutout of the season.
Both teams finished the afternoon with four corner kicks.
The women's soccer team will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 26, when they travel to Edwardsville, Pa. to take on Wilkes in a non-conference matchup at 4:30 p.m.
