Freshmen Lauren Byrne (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) and Matthew Mills (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) had standout weekends to lead The University of Scranton men's and women's swimming teams to victories at the Diamond City Invite. As a result, both have been named Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week for their sport.
Byrne earned the women's swimming & diving honor by setting two school records in individual victories and swimming a leg on three different winning relay teams. She got her weekend started by setting a school record while winning the 200 individual medley in 2:11.89. Byrne then broke the record in the 100 breaststroke, winning with a time of 1:07.06.
The weekend just kept getting better for Byrne as she swam on the winning 200 freestyle, 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams. She also added a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke and a fifth-place finish in the 50 freestyle, helping Scranton win the team title in the two-day event on Saturday and Sunday.
Mills was equally impressive, posting three individual victories, a relay win and two runner-up relay finishes. On Saturday, Mills won the 200 individual medley in 1:58.36, then won the 400 individual medley in 4:15.56. He followed that by swimming the final leg of the 400 medley relay team that won in 3:34.57. He also swam on the 800 medley relay team that finished second.
A day later, Mills set a meet record when he won the 200 breaststroke in 2:10.62 before swimming on the 400 freestyle relay team that finished second.
For Byrne, this is her second Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week honor, having also won the award on Oct. 30. Mills picked up his first Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week nod.
The men's and women's swimming & diving teams will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 2, when they host Ramapo at 1 p.m. in the Byron Center.
