Freshman Lauren Byrne (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) of The University of Scranton women's swimming & diving team was literally unbeatable over the weekend, winning three individual events and swimming on a victorious relay team in the Royals' 180-81 victory over Ramapo.
As a result of her performance on Saturday in the Byron Center, Byrne has been named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week.
Byrne started her day with a win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.16, just .06 seconds from matching the program record of 1:00.10 set by Sarah Gazdalski in 1999. Byrne also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:31.40 and the 200 individual medley in 2:14.80.
Byrne capped her day and the Royals' victory as part of the victorious 200 freestyle relay team that ended the meet by finishing first in 1:41.28. She was joined on that team by junior Emma Ilseman (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central), sophomore Elizabeth Howlin (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) and senior Raquel Wasserman (Pound Ridge, N.Y./The Fox Lane).
The women's swimming & diving team will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 13, when the Royals travel to Elizabethtown, Pa. for a dual meet against Landmark Conference foe Elizabethtown at 1 p.m.
