Coach Liz Sherman’s University of
Scranton women’s tennis team will play LaRoche College of
Pittsburgh in an NCAA Division III championships first-round match
either Thursday, May 9, or Friday, May 10, on the campus of
Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
Dates and starting times will be announced Tuesday.
Joining the Royals in the 7-team bracket are backyard neighbor Marywood University, Johns Hopkins, Mary Washington, St. Vincent, and Carnegie Mellon.
The winner of Scranton (9-7) and LaRoche (10-5) will take on Johns Hopkins (18-2) in a second-round match Friday or Saturday. The other first-round matches feature Marywood (12-5) against Carnegie Mellon (12-7) and Mary Washington (19-4) against St. Vincent (15-4).
The Royals will be making their second straight NCAA tournament appearance, having earned an automatic bid after winning the Landmark Conference championship on April 27. Scranton entered the Landmark tournament as the number three seed for the second consecutive season and went on the road to defeat Catholic University, 5-3, and top-seeded Goucher College, 5-3, to capture the title.
In the 2012 NCAA tournament, Scranton dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Ithaca College in a match played at Middlebury College in Vermont.
LaRoche earned an automatic bid by winning the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title last October. The Red Hawks enter Thursday/Friday’s match on an eight-match winning streak.
