Sophomore Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) had quite a week, winning all four of her matches to lead The University of Scranton women’s tennis team to its third straight Landmark Conference championship.
Walsh has been named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week after going 4-0, including two come-from-behind victories in Sunday’s championship match, a 5-3 victory over Catholic University at Royal Courts.
Walsh rallied from a 5-2 deficit in her match at No. 3 singles, winning eight straight games en route to a 7-5, 6-2 victory. That win came after she teamed with senior Devon Cohen (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) to overcome 3-0 and 4-1 deficits for an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles, the Royals’ only point in the three doubles matches. Walsh was named most valuable player of the Landmark championships.
Three days earlier, Walsh won both of her matches in a 5-3 victory over Juniata in a semifinal on Thursday, April 24. She again teamed with Cohen for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, then rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles.
Walsh is now 13-0 in singles play this season, including 8-0 against conference opponents. She has a career singles record of 14-5. She’s also 10-5 in doubles play this season, including 7-1 against conference foes. Her career doubles mark stands at 19-14.
This is the second time Walsh has been named Athlete of the Week, having also earned the honor on April 15, 2013.
The Royals will make their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance when the tournament begins on May 9-10. The field will be announced on Monday, May 5.
