SCRANTON, Pa. - The University of Scranton hosted their only match of their Fall 2016 schedule on Friday at Royal Courts, and fell to visiting SUNY-Oneonta, 6-3.
With the defeat, Scranton fell to 1-2 on their Fall season.
The match got off to a great start for the Royals in doubles action, as Scranton took two of the three matches contested to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
At number one doubles, the team of junior Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) took an 8-5 win, while in the number two spot on the doubles lineup, sophomore Elyse Smilnak (Holidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg) and senior Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) rolled to an 8-2 victory to give Scranton the 2-1 lead.
But, in singles play, SUNY-Oneonta took over, winning five of the six matches contested to take the three point win. Scranton's only win in singles was registered by Machado, who won in three sets at number three singles (7-6 (5-3), 3-6, 11-9).
The University of Scranton women's tennis team returns to action on Sunday, traveling to Lebanon Valley. The match is set for begin at 1 p.m.
