The University of Scranton men's and women's track & field teams are a little more than a week away from their first competition, which will be the first track & field action for a team at the University in more than 50 years.
The Royals of head coach Ozzie Brown open their indoor season on Friday, Dec. 1, at the River Hawks Opener at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa., with action starting at 4 p.m. It's the team's lone event in the fall semester, and they'll resume the indoor season in late January.
The University of Scranton sponsored an intercollegiate men's track & field team in the early 1950s, and it's uncertain exactly what year the Royals stopped competing. What is certain is that the River Hawks Opener will be the first women's track & field event in University history.
Both teams will compete during the indoor and outdoor seasons as members of the Landmark Conference. The men's team was chosen sixth in the indoor track & field preseason poll of coaches, finishing with 16 points. Moravian is the favorite with 60 points and six first-place votes, followed by Elizabethtown (46 points, one first-place vote), Susquehanna (42 points), Juniata (30), Catholic (24), Scranton and Goucher (13).
On the women's side, the Royals were chosen seventh. Moravian is favored with 58 points and five first-place votes, followed by Elizabethtown (52 points, two first place-votes), Susquehanna (40), Juniata (29), Catholic and Goucher (15 each) and Scranton (13).
After the holiday break, both teams will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the John Covert Classic at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. The Landmark Conference indoor track & field championships will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa.
