Jamie Spangler, head women’s
volleyball coach at The University of Scranton, has announced that
former Susquehanna University volleyball standout Emily
Carson will join the Royal coaching staff this fall as
an assistant coach.
A native of Caldwell, New Jersey, she was named first-team
All-Landmark Conference three times (2010-2012) and second team
once (2009). She led Susquehanna to four consecutive Landmark
Conference tournament appearances, including three semifinal berths
(2010, 2011, 2012) and a spot in the championship match in
2009.
She was also named honorable mention All-American by the American
Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and was a member of the
organization’s Team Academic Award in 2012. In
addition, she played with an NCAA Division III All-Star team that
toured Brazil her senior year.
Carson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology with a
minor in environmental science and is currently pursuing a Master
of Science degree in school counseling here at The University of
Scranton.
Since September 2013, she has served as a counselor aide for
Residential Treatment Center for Clear Vision Incorporated in
Montgomery, Pennsylvania, educating 24 patients on self-esteem,
current events, and community development, along with monitoring
and addressing patient changes to counselors and training in
medication distribution and safety and crisis management.
She also served as a tour guide for the Admissions Office at
Susquehanna for four years and as a coach/camp counselor for the
Caldwell-West Caldwell Recreation in her native Caldwell, New
Jersey, during the summers of 2007 through 2011.
Last fall, Carson served as an assistant volleyball coach at Penn
College of Technology.
The Royals will open the 2014 season on Friday, August 29, by hosting Gwynedd Mercy (3 pm) and LaRoche College (9 pm) in the first day of competition in the Scranton Invitational at the Long Center.
