UNION, N.J. - The University of Scranton volleyball team made quick work of Hood and SUNY-Plattsburgh on Friday night as part of the 2017 Cougar Classic held on the campus of Kean University, as the Royals swept both teams in three sets.
With the victories, the Royals improved to a perfect 7-0 on the year. The start is now the third-best in program history, passing a 6-0 start by the 2007 University of Scranton volleyball team. The women's volleyball team finished the 1978 season with a perfect 10-0 record in its third year of existence. The Royals also opened the 2012 season with nine straight victories.

In their first match of the night, the Royals pushed their record to 6-0 on the year after making quick work of Hood in straight sets.
In all three games, Scranton used rallies late to put Hood away. In the first set, a 7-3 run clinched a 25-20 win for Scranton, while the second game, a 10-3 run (with Scranton leading, 15-13) won the Royals the set by nine points. In the third and final game, the Royals opened an insurmountable 17-8 lead in the middle of play, and never looked back, taking their fourth three-set win of the young season.
Overall, junior Megan Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) had double-digits kills in a match for the second straight outing, finishing with a match-high 10 kills, hitting .350 in the win (three errors on 20 total attacks).
Elsewhere, freshman Kyra Bevenour (Sicklersville, N.J./Washington Township) had a match-high 31 assists, while also tallying 11 digs on the defensive end, which was also a match-high.
Scranton 3, SUNY-Plattsburgh 0 (25-8, 25-17, 25-19) | Box Score
It was more of the same for Scranton in their second match of the night against SUNY-Plattsburgh, as the Royals rolled to a three-set victory.
In the win, Scranton had their biggest win (by point margin) in a set on the year with a 25-8 victory in the opening game. In the second set, the Royals scored the final six points of play to coast to an eight-point win, then in the final set of the night for the Royals, Scranton pulled away in the middle of play, ending the match in three with a six-point win.
Overall, junior Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) was dominant yet again on the attack in a match, finishing with 17 kills, while hitting .406. Elsewhere, freshman setter Kindler Norman (Pittsburgh, Pa..Upper St. Clair) ended with a match-high 28 assists, while Monastra finished with 11 digs on defense.
The University of Scranton volleyball team concludes play at the 2017 Cougar Classic on Saturday, taking on host Kean at 10 a.m., then NYU at 12 p.m.
