Sarno Earns First Royal Athlete of the Week Award
Erika Sarno (Dalton, Pa./Abington Heights), a junior on The University of Scranton women’s cross-country team, opened the 2014 season with an impressive performance at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Friday evening.
That effort earned her the first Royal Athlete of the Week award for the 2014-2015 academic year.
Sarno was the first runner from an NCAA Division III institution to cross the finish line, finishing eighth overall in the 106-runner field in a time of 22:54.58 on a 6000-meter course. Her time was less than eight seconds off of her personal-best time of 22:47, which she recorded last November at the NCAA Mideast regional.
The Royals finished fourth in the 8-team field, which included Division I schools Lehigh, West Virginia University, and the University of Delaware.
Scranton returns to action this Saturday, September 6, at the Ron Stonitsch Invitational on the campus of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. The men’s race begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by the women’s race at 11:30.
