Freshman Grace Elliott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) of The University of Scranton women's soccer team scored the game-winning goal on Saturday to help lift the Royals past Arcadia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. As a result, she has been honored as The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week.
Elliott gave Scranton a 2-0 lead in Saturday's opening round NCAA Tournament game against the Knights by knocking home a cross for her third goal of the season. The tally would be the difference as Arcadia got on the board in the 62nd minute before the Royals sealed the victory with a late goal.
Elliott finished off a solid rookie season with seven points on three goals and one assist while playing in 19 games as a midfielder and forward for the Royals. She also now holds the distinction of having scored a game-winning goal in the NCAA Tournament.
Scranton finished the season with a 16-2-3 record after falling to No. 11 Christopher Newport in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, 2-0. The Royals made their third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament this fall and 18th appearance overall.
