Women's Basketball (11-0, 1-0 Landmark)
The University of Scranton women's basketball team went 3-0 during the holidays, including winning the title at the Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Classic.
The Lady Royals, who remain ranked third in the D3hoops.com Top 25, took the Poinsettia Classic title in the Long Center with wins on Saturday, Dec. 17, and Sunday, Dec. 18. In the opening game, they overcame a first-quarter deficit to defeat Washington & Lee, 69-54. Sophomore guard Bridgette Mann (Canadensis, Pa./Wallenpaupack) had 22 points, five rebounds and three assists, and senior forward Alexix Roman (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.
In the title game a day later, Scranton held off a talented Stockton squad for a 75-69 victory. Roman scored a season-high 27 points and pulled down eight rebounds, Mann finished with 15 points and nine assists, and freshman guard Mackenzie Yori (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) scored 13 points.
The Lady Royals were back at it two days later, rallying for a 63-52 win at Lebanon Valley on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Roman finished with 22 points, Mann had 12 and senior forward Sarah Payonk (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) and sophomore guard Christina Peden (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) had nine points each.
The women's basketball team is back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 3, when the Lady Royals travel to Abington, Pa. to take on Penn State-Abington at 6 p.m.
Men's Basketball (8-3, 1-0 Landmark)
The University of Scranton men's basketball team went 2-1 during the holidays, including a pair of victories in Puerto Rico.
The Royals traveled to San Juan, P.R. for a pair of games on Sunday, Dec. 18, and Monday, Dec. 19. In the first game, they knocked off Emory & Henry, 63-51. Senior center John Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) led the way with 14 points and 11 rebounds, junior guard Mitch Cross (Marriottsville, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) finished with 12 points, and junior forward Brandon Feinberg (Avon, Conn./Avon/Suffield Academy) had 10 points and four assists.
A day later, Scranton jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead en route to a 70-61 win over Montclair State. Feinberg and freshman guard Kyle DeVerna (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) both scored 14 points while Vitkus and junior forward Drew Schankweiler (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) had 11 points each.
On Friday, Dec. 30, the Royals went on the road and lost to 23rd-ranked Neumann, 89-66. Junior guard Kevin Doolan (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) had a team-high 19 points, freshman forward Matthew Mancuso (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) had 14 points and eight rebounds, and Vitkus added 10 points.
The Royals are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 4, when they host Gettysburg in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. in the Long Center.
