Women's Basketball (8-1)
The University of Scranton women's basketball team had a big week, going 3-0 and capturing the title in the Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Classic in the Long Center.
The Lady Royals, who are ranked 22nd in the d3hoops.com Top 25 opened the week with a hard-fought 67-64 road win at York (Pa.) on Wednesday, Dec. 13. Junior guard Bridgette Mann (Canadensis, Pa./Wallenpaupack) scored Scranton's final nine points and finished with a game-high 19 points. Sophomore guard Emily Sheehan (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) had 12 points, seven rebounds and two assists, and sophomore center Sofia Recupero (Whitestone, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) had 12 points, six rebounds and two assists.
On Friday, Dec. 15, the Lady Royals cruised to an 81-48 win over Hartwick in the opening round of the Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Classic in the Long Center. Sophomore guard Julia Gantz (Havertown, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) had a career-high 17 points, Mann also had 17 points, sophomore forward Makenzie Mason (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) finished with 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal, and senior center Katie Feehery (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) added 11 points, three assists, a rebound and a block.
A day later, Scranton defeated 17th-ranked Messiah, 65-60 in overtime, to capture the Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Classic title. The Lady Royals used an 8-2 run early in overtime to take control and then sealed the game at the foul line. Mann earned tournament MVP honors after finishing with a game-high 26 points. Senior guard Katie Broderick (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) had 16 points and eight rebounds, and Feehery finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
The Lady Royals are right back in action on Monday, Dec. 18, hosting Lebanon Valley in a non-conference game at 3 p.m. in the Long Center.
Men's Basketball (2-8)
The men's basketball team suffered a pair of losses during the week, falling to Arcadia, 72-56, on Tuesday, Dec. 12, and at The College of New Jersey, 101-72, on Saturday, Dec. 16.
Against Arcadia, the Royals were led by senior guard Ethan Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights), who had a team-high 18 points. Sophomore forward Matthew Mancuso (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finished the night with 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks in his first game after missing the team's first eight with an injury. Senior forward Drew Schankweiler (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) added 11 points, nine rebounds, three steals and an assist.
In Saturday's game at The College of New Jersey, Danzig again led the way with 18 points. He hit three 3-pointers, giving him 224 for his career, one shy of matching the program's career record of 225, held by Al Callejas (1997-01). Danzig also had six rebounds and three assists on the afternoon.
The Royals (2-8) also received 12 points and six rebounds from Mancuso and 11 points, six assists and four rebounds from senior guard Kevin Doolan (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge).
The men's basketball team is back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 19, when the Royals host Ursinus at 3 p.m. in the Long Center.
