Men's Basketball (3-8)
The University of Scranton men's basketball team ended the 2017 calendar year with a victory, defeating Ursinus, 85-72, on Tuesday, Dec. 19, in the Long Center.
Senior guard Mitch Cross (Marriottsville, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) hit seven 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 27 points in the victory.
Fellow senior guard Ethan Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights) also had a big night from beyond the arc, hitting a trio of 3-pointers, giving him 227 for his career, setting a new University of Scranton men's basketball record. His second triple of the game with 2:39 left in the first half gave him 226 for his career, passing the previous record of 225, held by Al Callejas (1997-00).
Sophomore forward Matthew Mancuso (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) also had a career high with 15 points along with six rebounds, two steals and two assists. Senior center Drew Schankweiler (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) had 12 points, seven rebounds, an assist and a steal. Danzig finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. And senior guard Kevin Doolan (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) finished with 11 assists, seven points, five rebounds, two steals and a block.
The Royals return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 3, when they go on the road to face Gettysburg in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.
Women's Basketball (11-1)
The University of Scranton women's basketball team went 3-0 during the holiday period, extending its winning streak to six heading into 2018.
The Lady Royals began the two-week festive period with a 70-59 win over Lebanon Valley on Monday, Dec. 18, in the Long Center. Sophomore forward Sofia Recupero (Whitestone, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) scored a game-high 18 points and senior forward Katie Feehery (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Senior guard Katie Broderick (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) added 12 points, two rebounds and three assists, and junior guard Bridgette Mann (Canadensis, Pa./Wallenpaupack) finished with 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and a block.
Scranton went to the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tenn. between Christmas and New Year's, coming away with a pair of victories, beginning with a 67-53 win over Wheaton (Ill.) on Friday, Dec. 29. Mann scored a team-high 17 points to go along with eight rebounds, six assists and a steal. Broderick hit four 3-pointers – all in the third quarter – on her way to 14 points, and Feehery finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, a block and an assist of the bench.
A day later, the Lady Royals rolled to a 72-45 victory over Keene State to wrap up their time at the Music City Classic at Volunteer State Community College. Mann had a team-high 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. She added four assists, two rebounds and a steal. Broderick, who also hit three 3-pointers, finished with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal. And sophomore guard Julia Gantz (Havertown, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) had a strong all-around game, finishing with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 6, when it hosts Elizabethtown in a Landmark Conference game at 4 p.m. in the Long Center.
