Women's Swimming & Diving (11-0)
The University of Scranton women's swimming & diving team also continued its winning streak, remaining perfect on the seasons with three victories.
The Royals defeated Marywood (211-82) and Misericordia (194.5-84.5) on Friday, Jan. 19 at Marywood. Freshman Lauren Byrne (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) won three individual events (100 breaststroke, 200 backstroke, and 200 IM) while junior Emma Ilseman (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) (200 freestyle and 200 backstroke) and freshman Marycate O'Sullivan (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) (200 butterfly and 100 butterfly) won two races each to lead Scranton to the sweep.
On Saturday, Jan. 20, the Royals posted a 159-76 victory at Drew. Byrne led the way with a pair of individual wins, taking first in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke while junior Lucy Fulton (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) and juniors Claire Mason (Livingston, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic Academy) and Susannah Ilseman (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) had a win and a second place finish in individual events.
The University of Scranton women's swimming & diving team will host its Senior & Alumni Day on Saturday, Jan. 27 against Susquehanna University starting at 1 p.m. in the Byron Center.
Men's Swimming & Diving (8-3)
The University of Scranton men's swimming & diving team extended its winning streak to four by claiming three victories on the week. The Royals defeated Marywood (223.5-56.5) and Misericordia (180-94) on Friday before topping Drew on Saturday, 123-108.
Freshman John Cannilla (Florham Park, N.J./Oratory Prep), sophomore Timothy Quigley (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood), and sophomore Michael Diana (Somerset, N.J./Immaculata-Somerville) won a pair of individual events each on Friday night. Cannilla won the 1000 and 500 freestyle races, Quigley was first in the 100 breaststroke and in the 100 butterfly, and Diana placed first in one and two-meter diving events.
On Saturday, Diana again won both diving events while Quigley (100 breaststroke), along with juniors Brayan Winiarz (Long Pond, Pa./Evergreen Community) (50 freestyle), and Alexander Rigione (Fairfield, Conn./Saint Joseph) (100 freestyle) also won individual events at to pace the Royals at Drew.
The University of Scranton men's swimming & diving team will return home to the Byron Center on Saturday, Jan. 27 to take on Susquehanna University starting at 1 p.m. in the Royals' Senior & Alumni Day.
Women's Basketball (16-1, 5-1)
The University of Scranton women's basketball team continued its winning ways, stretching its win streak to 11 games with a pair of hard-fought victories over two of the top teams in the Landmark Conference.
The Lady Royals worked overtime to defeat Moravian on Wednesday, Jan. 17 in the Long Center, 98-94. Junior guard Bridgette Mann (Canadensis, Pa./Wallenpaupack) scored a career-high 30 points including the 1,000th of career top become the 29th player in program history to reach the milestone.
Senior forward Katie Feehery (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) (27 points) and sophomore guard Makenzie Mason (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) (20 points) joined Mann with career-highs in the win over the Greyhounds.
On Saturday, Jan. 20, the Lady Royals used a strong fourth quarter to pull away with a 62-50 victory at Catholic after outscoring the Cardinals 21-10 in the final 10 minutes of the contest.
Mason led Scranton with a double-double on game-highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds while senior guard Katie Broderick (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) finished with 11 points.
The women's basketball team is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 24, when the Lady Royals visit Drew for a Landmark Conference game at 7 p.m.
Men's Basketball (8-9, 4-2 Landmark)
The University of Scranton men's basketball teams split a pair of road games in Landmark Conference play last week, winning at Moravian on Wednesday, 75-63, before falling at Catholic on Saturday, 76-52.
In the win over Moravian, sophomore forward Matthew Mancuso (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored a career-high 30 points and added seven rebounds and three steals in the victory. Senior forward Drew Schankweiler (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) finished with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds, and senior guard Ethan Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights) added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists as the Royals won their sixth straight.
Against Catholic, the Royals fell behind early and could never catch up as their winning streak came to an end. Schankweiler had another big game, finishing with 17 points and nine rebounds, and Danzig had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 24, when the Royals host Drew in a Landmark Conference matchup at 7 p.m. in the Long Center.
The wrestling team won its only match of the week, thumping Keystone, 46-6, in the Long Center on Saturday, Nov. 20.
The Royals (7-3) dropped the opening bout by pin at 125 pounds, then ran off nine straight victories, including a trio of pins. Senior Nicholas DePierro (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold) got the rout started with a pin in 6:21 at 133 pounds. He was joined in the pin column by sophomore John Sheedy (Somerset, N.J./Bishop George Ahr), who needed just 1:20 for a pin at 157 pounds, and senior Zachary D'Apolito (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior), who clamped his opponent at 174 pounds in 4:20.
The wrestling team will return to action on Friday, Jan. 26, when the Royals travel to Allentown, Pa. to take on Muhlenberg at 7 p.m.
