Royal Review: March 26-April 1

Men's Lacrosse (7-4, 1-1 Landmark)

The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team rolled to a 16-6 win over Catholic in its only game of the week, which was played on Thursday, March 29, at Fitzpatrick Field.

Sophomore attackman Connor Kirkwood (Millburn, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) scored a career-high seven goals and added an assist for a career-high eight points. His seven goals were one shy of tying the school's single-game record, which has been achieved four times, most recently in 2006.

Scranton (7-4, 1-1 Landmark) also received two goals and an assist from sophomore midfielder Quinn Killeen (Berkeley Heights, N.J./New Providence). Junior midfielder Adam Maiale (Blue Bell, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) led the defense with four caused turnovers and was second on the squad with seven ground balls.

The men's lacrosse team will be back in action on Wednesday, April 4, when the Royals host Misericordia at 6 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.

Women's Lacrosse (5-4, 1-1 Landmark)

The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team battled defending Landmark Conference champion and 22nd-ranked Catholic on the road on Thursday, going goal-for-goal with the Cardinals for much of the contest before eventually falling 18-15.

The Royals led by as many as three goals in the first half before Catholic rallied to take a one-goal lead, 10-9, into halftime.  The Cardinals outscored Scranton 7-4 over the first 16 minutes of the second half to take the largest lead of the contest at 17-13 and held off the Royals the rest of the way.

Junior Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored four goals, freshman Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) totaled three goals and added an assist, and sophomore Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) also recorded four points on two goals and two assists in the loss at Catholic

Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Putnam (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) turned aside eight shots in the setback, junior Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) collected a game-high seven draw controls, and junior Gabby Lins (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) picked up a team-high four ground balls against the Cardinals.

Scranton will take on another nationally-ranked foe on Tuesday night when they welcome #23 Rowan to Fitzpatrick Field.  Opening draw between the Royals and Profs is set for 7 p.m.

Baseball (7-6, 2-2 Landmark)

The baseball team split a pair of games during the week, edging Muhlenberg, 5-4, on Tuesday, March 27, and falling at Elizabethtown, 5-3, in a Landmark Conference game on Thursday, March 29.

In the win over Muhlenberg, s ophomore first baseman Kevin Haag (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining/Bridgton Academy) drove in four runs and freshman left fielder Connor Harding (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal Central) made a diving catch in the seventh inning that saved two runs.

On Thursday, Haag homered in the loss to Elizabethtown, giving him six RBIs in two games for the week. He finished the game with three hits while sophomore second baseman Tim Gailor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) had an RBI.

The baseball team is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, April 4, when the Royals host King's at 5 p.m. at a site to be determined.
