Press release from the Landmark Conference office, released on Tuesday, March 27, 2018.
TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Baseball Championship will have a different look and feel than in years past, as the 2018 edition of the conference championship will take place at the University of Scranton's Kevin P. Quinn, S.J. Athletics Campus from May 11-13. The top four teams following the completion of the regular season shall qualify for the three-day, double-elimination style tournament.
"Spring is one of the most exciting and challenging times of year for our baseball programs, as they not only compete with one another, but also sometimes have to battle the elements and unpredictable field conditions," said Dan Fisher, Commissioner of the Landmark Conference. "Scranton's commitment to constructing a state-of-the-art, synthetic turf baseball complex provides the Landmark with an advantage that few other conferences enjoy, and allows us scheduling flexibility and control that will ensure we offer our student-athletes a high-quality championship experience. I'm looking forward to watching our teams compete for a Landmark crown under the lights in the Electric City."
The Athletics Directors of the Landmark institutions approved hosting the baseball championship at Scranton for 2018 following a recommendation from the conference's coaches and a review of the conference tournament structure from previous years. Previously, the Landmark championship was determined following two weekends of best-of-three series play among the top four seeds, with the winners from the first weekend meeting for the conference title during the second weekend. The 2018 format is a return to the structure used by the conference from 2008 through 2014.
Scranton broke ground in the spring of 2017 on the new $14 million Kevin P. Quinn, S.J. Athletics Campus, which, once completed, shall include NCAA regulation baseball and softball fields and a multipurpose field that meets NCAA standards for soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey. The baseball facility will feature synthetic-turf with more than 400 bleacher seats, home and away bullpens, lights, and two batting cages.
The Landmark Conference has partnered with the Hilton Scranton & Conference Center, which shall serve as the championship hotel for teams, event staff, and fans. The Hilton Scranton is located less than one mile from the Quinn Athletics Campus and offers a special rate for fans attending the championship of $129 per night with breakfast included. The deadline to reserve a room in the Landmark Baseball Championship block is Tuesday, May 8; click here to book a room at the Hilton Scranton.
The 2018 Landmark Baseball Championship Schedule shall be announced following the completion of regular season play.
