Freshman Tyler Kirsten (Wallenpaupack, Pa./Wallenpaupack Area) was named the Player of the Week while junior Bobby Hegarty (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) was honored as the Pitcher of the Week on Monday as The University of Scranton swept the weekly Landmark Conference baseball awards.
Kirsten was selected as the conference's Player of the Week after beginning his collegiate career with a strong effort at the player. The freshman infielder batted .556 with five hits while scoring two runs, drawing one walk, and stealing a base in Scranton's first two games.
In Saturday 3-2 loss to Albright, Kirsten recorded his first collegiate hit before going 4-for-5 with a walk, a stolen base, and two runs scored as the Royals dropped a 16-10 slugfest to Montclair State on Sunday at Volpe Field.
Hegarty was named the league's Pitcher of the Week after a strong start in Saturday's season opener against Albright. The junior right tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just a pair of singles in the no-decision.
Hegarty, who also picked up one strikeout while issuing two walks, was in line for the win when he exited the game prior to the start of the sixth inning, but Albright rallied to edge the Royals, 3-2.
Scranton (0-2) returns to the diamond on Saturday when it hosts Arcadia in a non-conference game starting at 11:30 a.m. at Volpe Field.
