For the third time in her freshman campaign, goalie Jenna Cyr (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) of the University of Scranton field hockey team was named the Landmark Conference's Defensive Athlete of the Week for the period ending Oct. 22 on Monday.
On the week, Cyr and the Royals played in only one match and gutted out a 3-2 victory at home over Goucher on Saturday to stay undefeated on the year (15-0) and in the Landmark Conference (6-0) entering the final week of the regular season.
In the match, Goucher was aggressive on the offensive end in the second half, as the Gophers fired seven shots in the final 35 minutes of play.
After allowing an early goal, Cyr and the Scranton defense was able to keep Goucher off the board for the final 34 minutes of action. Overall, Cyr made three huge saves throughout the period, as the Royals scored late to take the one score win.
With her four save performance against Goucher, Cyr has now made 37 saves on the year and has allowed just nine goals in 805 minutes of game action. With a goals-against average of 1.01, Cyr leads the conference in save percentage (.804), goals allowed and goals against average.
Cyr and the rest of the Royals field hockey team returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Vassar for a non-conference match. Things get underway at 7 p.m.
