Seniors Elizabeth Tolley (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Katherine McVeagh (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township) scored second half goals to lead The University of Scranton to a 2-0 victory over visiting Marywood on Tuesday at Weiss Field. The win lifts the Royals to a perfect 7-0 on the season while the Pacers slip to 4-2 overall.
Sophomore Jenna Cyr (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) made one save and got some help from fellow sophomore, Christina Motz (Glenside, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy), who picked up a defensive save to extend Cyr's shutout streak to 309:27.
Scranton had several dangerous chances in a first half in which they outshot Marywood by a 5-2 margin, but Pacers' goalkeeper Kerri Mountz stopped a penalty stroke and the visitors also made a pair of defensive saves.
Tolley broke through in the 50th minute of play, taking a feed off of a penalty corner from junior Nicolette Keale (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) and blasting home her sixth goal of the season, tied for the Scranton team-lead.
McVeagh doubled the Royals' advantage in the 58th minute, netting her second tally of the fall with junior Gracie McClatchy (Havertown, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) assisting on the insurance goal.
That was more than enough offense for Scranton's defense, which has allowed just one goal in its last five games with four shutouts during that span.
The hosts finished the contest with a 14-5 advantage in shots along with a 10-6 edge in penalty corners.
Scranton returns to the field on Saturday when it opens Landmark Conference play against Catholic. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Weiss Field.
