Sophomore Megan Gallagher (Thorndale, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) of The University of Scranton field hockey team scored one of the biggest goals in program history last week, netting the game-winning goal in the Royals' 1-0 upset of Catholic in the Landmark Conference semifinals. As a result, she has been named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week.
Scranton faced a tall task in Wednesday's semifinal round, traveling to top-seeded Catholic as the fourth seed against a Cardinal team that had beaten the Royals seven straight times and won 13 of the 15 all-time meetings between the two teams.
With the game still scoreless with 11:01 left in regulation, Gallagher knocked in a rebound for what would prove to be the only goal of the contest, sending Scranton to the Landmark Conference championship game for just the second time in program history.
Gallagher's goal was her fifth of the season and third game-winning tally on the year.
The sophomore finished the season with 17 points on five goals and seven assists and now has 33 points, nine goals, and 15 assists in her career. Five of Gallagher's tallies have been game-winners.
Gallagher and the Royals finished the season as the Landmark Conference runner-up with a 13-6 overall record after dropping a 2-0 decision at Susquehanna on Saturday.
