SELINSGROVE - Host Susquehanna scored a pair of goals in the third quarter, then another in the fourth to pull away from The University of Scranton field hockey team on Saturday in Landmark Conference action, 3-0
With the loss, the Royals fell to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in the Landmark Conference. Susquehanna improved to 8-10 and 4-2 in the Landmark with the victory.
In the opening two quarters of the game, Scranton was aggressive on the offensive end, firing two shots in the first period and six more in the second. But, the Royals could not get a shot past Susquehanna goalie Veronica Green, who made six saves in the first 35 minutes to keep the Royals off the scoreboard.
Scoreless going into intermission, Susquehanna quickly broke the scoreless tie with a goal 14 seconds into the second half, as the River Hawks went up, 1-0, on the Royals. Seven minutes and change later, the River Hawks added another goal, making it a 2-0 game.
Up by two entering the fourth quarter, the River Hawks scored again in the 49th minute to go up three. From there, Susquehanna rolled, as they held Scranton to just three shots in the second half (all of which came in the fourth quarter).
Overall, both Scranton and Susquehanna fired 10 shots, apiece, in the game, as the Royals held a 9-4 edge on penalty corners. On the offensive end for Scranton, sophomore Allie Benadon (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) had the most shots on the day for the Royals, finishing with five (three of which were on goal)
The University of Scranton field hockey team returns to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Vassar for their final non-conference match of the regular season. Action gets underway at 7 p.m.
