Eleven games into his first collegiate season, freshman guard Kevin Doolan (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) of the University of Scranton men's basketball team appears to have settled in quite nicely.
Doolan averaged 14.8 points in four games over the holiday break, helping the Royals (9-2) go 3-1 and head into the heart of Landmark Conference play on a three-game winning streak. As a result, Doolan has been named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week.
Doolan, who moved into the starting lineup in the second game of the season and has remained there, began last week by scoring 15 points in a 79-74 loss to Husson on Sunday, Dec. 28, in the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas. A day later, he poured in a career-high 20 points, including three free throws in the final 18 seconds, in a 64-61 victory over Hanover in the D3hoops.com Classic.
After the Royals returned home, Doolan picked up right where he left off, matching his career high with 20 points in an 86-83 overtime victory over King's on Friday, Jan. 2, in the Cross-County Challenge in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He was nine of 11 from the free throw line in the victory, including a pair with 22 seconds remaining that gave the Royals a three-point lead.
Doolan capped the week by scoring four points and handing out four assists in a 75-73 victory over Wilkes on Saturday, Jan. 3, in the Cross-County Challenge.
For the week, Doolan was 20-for-30 (66.7 percent) from the field, 6-for-14 (42.9 percent) from 3-point range and 13 of 16 (81.3 percent) from the free throw line while averaging two assists, 1.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals.
The Royals, who are currently 16th in the D3hoops.com Top 25, are back in action on Tuesday when they host Drew University in a Landmark Conference game at 7 p.m. in the Long Center.
