The University of Scranton men's basketball team will return three starters from last season's squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season and 27th time in program history. Those three players – senior John Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and juniors Ethan Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights) and Kevin Doolan (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) – will serve as captains for the upcoming 2016-17 season.

Vitkus is coming off a junior season in which he started all 27 games and earned Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Year and second team honors. He finished the season averaging 11.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 0.9 steals while shooting 66.3 percent from the field, the highest single-season field goal percentage in school history.

Danzig started 25 of the 26 games he played in last season, averaging 9.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists. He 40.4 percent from 3-point range to lead the team, making 65 of 161 attempts. His 65 3-pointers made are tied for seventh-most in a single season in school history.

Doolan returns at point guard after starting 26 of 27 games last year, averaging 11.1 points, 4.4 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals. His 4.4 assists per game was second-best in the Landmark Conference and he made 44 3-pointers, second-most on the team.

The Royals will open the 2016-17 season on Friday, Nov. 18, when they host Sarah Lawrence at 7:30 p.m. in the opening day of the Hilton Scranton Invitational in the Long Center.
