Senior center John Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) of The University of Scranton men's basketball team was an unstoppable force last week, posting double-doubles in each of the Royals' three victories. As a result of his dominance, Vitkus has been named Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week for men's basketball.
In the three victories, Vitkus averaged 18.7 points, 12.3 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game while shooting 75.8 percent (25-for-33) from the field.
The week began with Vitkus scored 16 points and pulling down 13 rebounds in a 76-75 victory over Cabrini on Tuesday, Nov. 22, in the Long Center. He also blocked six shots and had an assist while going 7-for-12 from the field.
On Saturday, Vitkus opened the Cross-County Challenge with an impressive 23-point, 14-rebound effort in a 79-70 win over King's in the event played at Wilkes University. He finished 10-for-12 from the field and two assists, two steals and a block.
A day later, Vitkus was named Cross-County Challenge MVP after scoring 17 points and corralling 10 rebounds in an 88-70 win over Wilkes. He added a block and an assist while going 8-for-9 from the field.
In five games this season, Vitkus has posted four double-doubles while averaging 17.0 points, 11.6 rebounds and 2.8 blocks. He is shooting a sizzling 77.1 percent from the field.
Vitkus and the Royals are back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 30, when they travel to Geneva, N.Y. to face Hobart at 7 p.m.
