Senior center John Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) of The University of Scranton men's basketball team had another standout week in a season full of them to help the Royals win twice and move into a tie for first place in the Landmark Conference. As a result, he has been named the University's Athlete of the Week.
Vitkus averaged 19.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 blocks while shooting an eye-opening 75 percent in the two wins. He has now scored in double figures in 15 straight games and 17 of 19 this season.
On Wednesday, Jan. 25, Vitkus had a team-high 20 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and an assist in a 64-39 win at Drew. He finished 10-for-16 from the field and played a key role in the Royals allowing just 39 points, the lowest total this season and the fourth-lowest in the team's 16 seasons under head coach Carl Danzig.
Three days later, Vitkus scored 18 points, pulled down six rebounds, handed out five assists and blocked a shot in an 81-48 win over Elizabethtown in the Long Center. He was perfect from the field, going 8-for-8 while adding a pair of free throws on three attempts.
For the season, Vitkus is averaging 15.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.4 assists while shooting 62.9 percent from the field.
The Royals will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 1, when they go on the road to face Moravian in a key Landmark Conference matchup at 7 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa.
