Senior center John Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) of The University of Scranton men's basketball team continued his dominant play last week, leading the Royals to a pair of Landmark Conference victories. As a result, he has been named the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week for men's basketball.
Vitkus averaged 18.0 points while shooting 73.7 percent (14-for-19) in the two victories. He added 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals as the Royals (16-5, 8-2 Landmark) pushed their winning streak to five and remained tied for first place in the Landmark Conference.
In a 69-61 win at Moravian on Wednesday, Feb. 1, Vitkus matched his career high with 23 points while going 9-for-12 from the field. He also had eight rebounds, three blocks, two assists and a steal as Scranton pulled ahead of Moravian in the Landmark Conference standings and avenged a loss to the Greyhounds two weeks earlier.
On Saturday, Feb. 4, Vitkus had 13 points while going 5-for-7 from the field, and added six rebounds, a block and a steal in a 64-61 win at Juniata. He has now scored in double figures in 15 straight games and 19 of 21 this season.
Vitkus and the Royals will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 8, when they host Drew in a Landmark Conference game at 7 p.m. in the Long Center.
