Senior center John Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) helped The University of Scranton men's basketball team finish the regular season with a flourish, averaging 22.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in a pair of victories. As a result, he has been named the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week for men's basketball.
Vitkus and the Royals came into the week knowing that a pair of victories would give them the top seed in this week's Landmark Conference playoffs. The 6-foot-9 center made sure that scenario came true.
Vitkus opened the week by matching his career-high with 24 points and adding 10 rebounds in a 75-66 win over 15th-ranked Susquehanna on Wednesday, Feb. 15, in the Long Center. He went 9-for-15 from the field and added two assists, a steal and a block as Scranton defeated the nationally-ranked River Hawks for the second time this season.
On Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 18, in the Long Center, Vitkus had 21 points and 11 rebounds in an 85-70 win over Goucher. He went 6-for-9 from the field and 9-for-13 from the free throw line in just 26 minutes as the Royals wrapped up the regular season with back-to-back wins.
Vitkus has now scored in double figures in 19 straight games and 23 of 25 this season. He has 11 double-doubles and is averaging 16.6 points and 8.6 rebounds this season. This marks the second time this season Vitkus has been named Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week. He also won the honor on Feb. 6.
Scranton (19-6) will open the Landmark Conference playoffs as the top seed and will host Catholic in a semifinal on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Long Center.
